♡ Brett Field
Introduction
I am Brett Field, a Cape Town based artist specialising in African inspired storytelling art and sculpture. Working in charcoal and pastel alongside sculptural works, I create original pieces that translate heritage, identity, memory, and cultural narratives into powerful, tactile artworks.
My practice is deeply rooted in personal experience. As a child, I travelled extensively through rural Africa, where I developed a profound love for its people, traditions, landscapes, and the quiet strength that lives within everyday moments. Those journeys continue to shape every artwork I make.
My Artistic Vision
I create for collectors and designers who value narrative led spaces, interiors, homes, hospitality venues, and corporate environments enriched with meaning, provenance, and emotional depth. My charcoal and pastel works emphasise materiality, layered textures, and subtle contrasts, while my sculptures extend these stories into three dimensional form, often incorporating elements such as beadwork and traditional materials.
Whether portraying cultural portraits, wildlife encounters, or symbolic scenes, each piece honours the individuality, adornment, and spirit of African heritage. I explore recurring themes of joy and power, resilience and connection. My artworks are designed not only to beautify a space but to anchor atmosphere, spark conversation, and evoke a lasting emotional response.
Process and Practice
I work directly with individual collectors, interior designers, and organisations to produce original artworks and custom commissions. From initial conversations about your vision or personal story, through sketches and refinements, to final creation, framing, and delivery, I ensure every piece aligns perfectly with its intended environment.
Sculpture is now available alongside my two dimensional works, allowing for richer, multi dimensional expressions of African narratives.
Why I Create
For me, art is a bridge between past and present, memory and modernity. Every piece I create is an invitation to engage with African cultural narratives in a personal and meaningful way. I believe my artworks are my love letters from Africa to the world.
